47% of black males complete high school + Only 28% complete on time!
A 50-state report from the Schott Foundation for Public Education has come to a dispiriting conclusion:

Public education is failing black male students. Nationwide, the graduation rate for this demographic of students is a paltry 47 percent. And in some major cities, it’s perilously low—in New York City and Philadelphia, for example, only 28 percent of black males complete high school on time.

New York state has the worst overall graduation rate for black males at 25 percent. On the other end of the spectrum, amongst states with at least 100,000 black male students in their public schools, New Jersey is able to get nearly 70 percent of these kids through high school on time.

The Schott Foundation assigns some of New Jersey’s success to its Abbott Plan for getting disadvantaged kids into early childhood education programs. I might be wrong here, but I believe that program did not begin until 1999; thus, it likely did not affect many of the students who graduate in 2007-2008 school year, which was the one measured by the report. Still, the city of Newark, at 76 percent, boasts the highest graduation rate in the country for black males, at 76 percent.

The data provided in the report, says Schott Foundation CEO John Jackson, is intended to point in the direction where education reform needs to head: toward creating “educationally sound” policy to level the playing field when it comes to learning.

Unsurprisingly, the Schott Foundation was one of the civil rights groups that warned the Obama’s administration that its Race to the Top program would not result in “equal education for all.” You can see the state-by-state results of its study at The Schott 50 State Report on Black Males and Education site.

A Texas man is in police custody after authorities say he beat his son for eight hours until he died because he would not fall asleep.
Police arrested 34-year-old Alex McGowen Duncan for the fatal beating of his son 6-year-old Tekerrious Jackson after police say he beat the boy for two weeks after he came to stay with him for the summer.
Houston police report that Duncan would force the child to get on his knees and raise his arms above his head before punching him in the chest.
On Friday at around 7 p.m. police believe Duncan saw the boy's eyes flutter in the one-bedroom apartment he shared with his girlfriend 30-year-old Tammyra Sampson and her 11-year-old daughter.
The man reportedly became so enraged that he ordered the boy to raise his hands above his head and punched his chest repeatedly until 3 a.m. Saturday.
Duncan described the punishment to police as “chest boxing” and said his girlfriend only intervened to “show him” how to discipline the child with a belt.
Both Sampson and her daughter witnessed the beating until the boy showed signs of having a seizure, was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead on arrival.
When the father was interviewed by police he told them he beat his son to teach him how to “man up.
Police say Duncan also admitted to beating the 11-year-old girl but said “not as severely” because she was a girl.
The child has been taken into child protective custody while both Sampson and Duncan were arrested.
Sampson has been charged with injury to a child causing serious bodily injury by omission while Duncan has been charged with murder.

Arguing over money is nothing new for most families, especially when recent college graduates with massive student loans start looking to their parents for economic assistance in today's tough job market. And things can get tense when parents try to decide how much of that debt they're willing to help out with.

Most of the time, though, that decision isn't decreed in a court of law.

But that's exactly what happened when Dana Soderberg sued her father to force him to fulfill their agreement to pay for her education at Southern Connecticut State University.

Dana didn't take a lawsuit against her own father based on a mere promise, however—she had a legal document to back her up.

When Howard and Deborah Soderberg divorced in 2004, Howard—a property developer—agreed to pay for the education of their three children.

Apparently Dana foresaw that his word wouldn't be enough. In 2005, she convinced her father to sign a written contract that would require him to pay for her college tuition until she turned 25, as well as cover related expenses such as textbooks and car insurance. For her part, she agreed to apply for student loans that her father would cover if she received them.

But Howard stopped paying her tuition just before her senior year, forcing Dana to take out a $20,000 student loan (co-signed by her mother). After graduating as an art major, Dana filed a breach of contract lawsuit against her father with the aid of family attorney Renee C. Berman.

Representing himself in court, Howard contended that his daughter nullified their contract first when she—supposedly—didn't try hard enough to apply for student loans. He even filed a counterclaim alleging that she dropped a few classes and kept the money for herself. In Dana's defense, Berman pointed out that Dana was forced to drop some courses due to the continued tardiness of her father's tuition payments.

"They just don't have a relationship," Berman said about Dana and Howard. "It has to be weak to begin with if you enter into that agreement."

Berman also noted how unperturbed Dana's dad seemed throughout the trial. "Here his daughter's bringing him to court and there's no sadness, no remorse that his daughter was in this situation having to sue him."

After two-day trial, the judge ruled that Dana had indeed fulfilled her part of the contract and awarded her about $47,000 in damages, which covered the initial loan, interest and attorney fees.

If a daughter successfully suing her father for nearly $50,000 to recoup the cost of her college loans sounds unusual, Dana's attorney would be the first to agree. "Nothing that I've researched has shown any cases like this and hopefully there won't be any more, because it's a sad situation," Berman admitted.

As an art major-turned-teacher facing a grim economy (liberal arts majors' salaries' dropped 8.9 percent in the last year), Dana's legal victory should ease some of her monetary concerns. But most college grads can't turn to the legal system to relieve them of their student loan woes. Unlike other types of debt—such as mortgage or credit card—student loans aren't wiped away by declaring bankruptcy.

That means grads who can't afford to make ends meet can end up defaulting on their loans, which effectively ruins their credit. What's worse, defaulting means being turned over to a collection agency—and the fee that incurs can turn an already imposing amount of debt into downright terrifying numbers.

Dr. Michelle Bisutti, for instance, finished medical school in 2003 with $250,000 in student loans. Today, she owes $555,000—and $53,000 of that is just a fee for being turned over to a collection agency.

The New York Times recently shared the story of Cortney Munna, a college grad who was convinced her NYU degree was worth the approximately $97,000 in loans she took out to pay for it. Now almost a third of Munna's income goes to covering the federal and private loans she took out to nab that NYU degree.

While most college grads don't owe money in excess of $100,000 (10 percent of the 2007-08 class owes more than $40,000), at least two-thirds of those who complete a four-year program end up owing an average of $23,000 in student loans.

And that's bad news for people who are slowly finding out a college degree isn't necessarily as profitable as they have been led to believe.

Recent studies indicate that while having a college degree tends to ensure a higher salary than those with a high school diploma, the increase in pay scale isn't as large as society often assumes. According to a study conducted for Bloomberg Businessweek, most of the people who recoup the cost of their higher education and out-earn high school grads by over a million dollars (over the course of their lives) primarily come from elite private schools.

For the majority of Americans who can't afford an Ivy League education, there are plenty of state schools that offer competitive academics at much more reasonable prices. The University of North Carolina recently topped Kiplinger's "Best Value in Public Colleges" list, and UNC grads don't seem to be hit as hard by the student debt crisis. The average UNC grad ends up with $14,936 worth of debt—a full $8,000 less than the national average.

So, for those whose parents aren't legally bound to cover the cost of their education, there's still hope for earning back the money you invest in your education.

One of the most horrible stories to come out of Chicago's south side happened this morning when Chicago detectives found the bodies of two kidnapped teens.

Detectives found the bodies of 17-year-old Dante Coleman and 17-year-old Ibitoye Olayinka, the two teens were kidnapped Sunday night and their bodies were found today stripped naked on rail road tracks shot execution style. Chicago Police News Affairs office says both had been shot multiple times in the head and back.

Our hearts go out to the families of these two young men who lost their lives to senseless violence, Chicago is in deep crisis and the numerous stories coming out of the Chi gets worse with every day.

Los Angeles Academy teacher LaMar Queen has found a new method for his students to excel in math, rhyming through Hip-Hop.

Eighth Graders at Los Angeles Academy are using Hip-Hop music to build a connection and assist them in improving their math skills.

He was recently featured in the Associated Press and tells the AP ,

“Math is a bad word in a lot of households but if we put it in a form that kids enjoy, they'll learn."

The raps are used to help memorize algebra, geometry and even Shakespeare. Queen, who has been at LA Academy since 2007, says the idea for rapping came two months after he was hired to teach and told that his class was boring by his students.

Taking this honest criticism as motivation, the 26-year-old created a lesson plan that included his debut song ‘Slope Intercept." Word soon spread around the school and Queen received positive criticism from the school faculty as well.

Aside from allowing the students to memorize formulas like in "Slope Intercept", Queen also puts inspirational pieces in his verses. These lines include “be a math sensation”, get “A's on your papers", and “Listen to your parents.”

In April he won a national award for outstanding math achievement from "Get Schooled", a pro-education initiative launched by Viacom and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Queen is now looking to make rap math a business and launched a website, MusicNotesOnline, to market his rap CD and DVD, and expand the use of rap in education to other academic subjects.

Dipset's Jim Jones has talked about teaching an eight week music course and revealed what actions he has taken so far.

Although he has more than a decade of music business experience, Jones says he is still learning himself.

"I think the business is pretty easy to learn especially the way the kids are so susceptible to music ... they could learn a song in one day," the rapper explained in an interview. "But, one of my angles I am coming with is building a bridge between music and real education. It seems that they learn songs in a way that they should be learning their lessons, but they don't...I think I am still a part of the next generation of executives. I'm not a full blown executive yet, but I hope that I can lead by example as far as my hustle and my work ethic. I'm trying to make the classroom into a makeshift label, where we deal with publishing, marketing, and promotion. We could have an artist, a manager run through it and see how that would work." Earlier this month, Jones revealed that he was approved to teach high school students.

"I finally got the teacher thing cleared with the Board of [Education] -- I'll be teaching a curriculum for eight weeks before the school year's out," Jones told radio host Angela Yee. "I'm teaching all parts of what goes on in the music from the artistry part, from the executive part of it, from the label owner part of it, marketing, promotion, publicity, we gonna go through the whole motion with how important a lawyer is to an artist, what exactly a lawyer's job is, what exactly a manager's job is." He initially announced his move to teaching in an interview last month.

"Yeah, should I make them call me Mr. Jones? I'll be teaching for eight weeks, I'll be teaching a real curriculum, right now they're actually going back and forth with the Board of Education to see what goes on and sh*t. I fully don't know the whole logistics of everything -- it's definitely going to be fun...I'ma have to go home the weekend before and write out my lessons -- this will be the funnest class you can go to and sh*t but you gonna learn a lot. We all went to school, n*ggas didn't like homework, but we knew every single song that was out. Word for word, ad libs, all that...I think they'll get this common sense. Music 101 I guess [is the course title.] I've done music business since I was a teenager, I had major executive positions, I've been successful as an artist and successful as a label, we've been successful as a movement..." Last December, Jones left his post at Columbia Records for independent distributor E1 Music.

XXLMag.com has learned that Dipset Capo Jim Jones has left Columbia Records and recently signed a deal to release his next solo studio album on E1 Music, formerly known as Koch Records. According to the contract, the Harlem rapper will also drop a mixtape vie E1 as well. Jones has a long history with the E1. Along with releasing a handful of records on the imprint, last January he was appointed vice president of urban A&R. (XXL Mag)

PHILADELPHIA — Just call him Mr. Danza.

Tony Danza will face an audience of Philadelphia 10th-graders beginning this fall for a yet-to-be-titled reality show on teaching.

School commissioners approved the plan Wednesday. The vote allows at least 13 episodes to be shot and broadcast on the cable channel A&E.

The 58-year-old Danza is a former talk show host and star of the sitcoms “Taxi” and “Who’s the Boss?” He will co-teach an English class at Northeast High School, the same school where the 1968 documentary “High School” was filmed.

The program had the working title of “Teach” and is tentatively scheduled to premiere in spring 2010.

Critics say the show will disrupt education. But Mayor Michael Nutter says it will spotlight the joys and challenges of urban education.

Pop sensation Rihanna is speaking out about the night her then-boyfriend Chris Brown beat her, saying it was "humiliating" and "traumatizing" to admit the assault took place and that it was "wrong" that she went back to Brown afterwards.

"So far in love. So unconditional that I went back. It's humiliating to say this happened. To accept that? It's a traumatizing experience," she said.

Her decision to go back to Brown, she said, was a mistake.

"I stayed. I even went back after he beat me, which was wrong," she said. "But again ... I'm a human being and people put me on a very unrealistic pedestal. And all these expectations, I'm not perfect."

The 21-year-old star acknowledged that Brown held her in a headlock twice that night and bit her on the ear and fingers. She told Sawyer that she did not try to fight back.

"I just wanted it to stop. I was not interested in hurting him back," she said.

After months of silence since the February beating, Rihanna decided to speak publicly about the ordeal so she can be a voice to help others who may be in danger of returning to abuse.

"It's completely normal to go back. It's not right. I learned the hard way, but again, this is what I want people to know," she said. "When I realized that my selfish decision for love could result in some young girl getting killed, I could not be easy with that part. I couldn't be held responsible for going back.

The grieving family of a 13-year-old Queens boy shot to death outside a car wash pleaded for witnesses to come forward as investigators took a suspect into custody, police sources said Sunday.

"Do the right thing!" begged Donna Greaves, whose son, Kevin Miller, was gunned down Friday in Cambria Heights. "And let someone know who's responsible."

Investigators have a 16-year-old "person of interest" at the 105th Precinct in Queens Village who was being questioned and will be part of witness lineup, the police sources said.

The unidentified suspect has not yet been charged with a crime, sources said.

Miller, a freshman at Humanities and the Arts Magnet High School, was shot in the head about 3 p.m. after he and a friend stumbled upon a fight near Campus Magnet High School Linden and Springfield Blvds.

"He was an innocent bystander, in the wrong place at the wrong time," said Greaves, 35, fighting back tears.

Heartbroken relatives quickly gathered at Long Island Jewish Medical Center, where Miller was pronounced dead.

"As soon as I saw him, I walked out of the room and cried in my mother's arms," said cousin Steven King, 14, who grew up in the same house with Miller.

Mayor Bloomberg blasted the shooting today and called for stricter gun laws.

"I don't know when we're going just as a society finally say enough is enough," said Bloomberg. "Here's another young kid with a gun and an innocent 13 year old is dead. I mean, what kind of a society do we have?"

A 17-year-old boy who was shot in the leg during the incident remained in stable condition yesterday.

Miller, a junior usher at the New Jerusalem Baptist Church in Queens who attended a Bible study group, was not the type of kid to get mixed up in a street brawl where bullets might fly, family said.

"He don't know streets. He knows family," said aunt Sharon Griffis, 43.

Miller's mother gave him extra money Friday morning as a reward for good grades and doing his chores, Greaves said. He was going to use the cash to get food at McDonald's with a friend.

As they approached the restaurant, they saw a group of people fighting and the two boys ran away. When the shots rang out, the friend looked back to see Miller on the ground, relatives said.

"I want justice," Greaves said. "I want them to know the type of child they took away."

Miller's loved ones, who affectionately called him "Pretty Boy," steered him away from trouble. They built a basketball court in their backyard where he and Steven played, and Greaves had walked her son to PS/MS 124 in Queens every day.

He started commuting on his own when he started high school. "This is my biggest fear," said Greaves, a supervisor at a medical lab, "him going to high school on his own."

Two days before he was killed, Miller's family got together in Queens and feasted on broccoli, baked potatoes and Buffalo wings. Tomorrow, they will finalize funeral arrangements. "We need to deal with the facts," said Griffis.
"We have to bury a 13-year-old boy whose life just began.

Today, I got with my co-host on Financial Lovemaking, Ms. S. Tia Brown, to talk about the situation at Howard University and the insanity of recent student protests. Tia, who is a Howard University alumnus, also has a brother who attends the institution. She openly and honestly breaks down the experiences that she had while attending the institution and discusses some experiences her brother has had as well.During this conversation, we came to the following conclusions:

1) Howard University is an outstanding HBCU, which is why we must have some degree of patience.

There is a reason the students love Howard, and the institution is responsible for producing some of our most productive citizens. For that reason, the school must be respected. No matter what critiques are thrust upon the institution, Howard will always be one of the most outstanding universities in the nation.

2) HBCUs don't have the same resources as predominantly white institutions.

We must remember that Howard and even the most elite black institutions simply do not have the funds that major white universities possess. So, we cannot expect to get the same results in all scenarios. Man and woman power, computers, and other infrastructure are expensive to obtain and maintain. Spelman and Howard have endowments of $291 Million and $524 Million, respectively, while institutions such as Harvard and Yale carry endowments of $36 Billion and $23 Billion. Due to the legacy of slavery and economic inequality in America, predominantly white universities have a lot more "cheese" to work with, which gives them a huge advantage.

3) Enough if enough. It's time for an intervention.

The problem is that many concerns with our HBCUs go beyond the size of the endowment. Howard has a reputation for mismanagement of resources and administrative bungling that cannot be explained away by less money. These issues should be addressed openly and honestly if our institutions are going to get any better.

4) We need independent leadership.

Since it is incredibly difficult for most HBCUs to be fixed from the inside, an outside entity should be given the power to go into these institutions to determine ways in which they can be made to operate more efficiently. There are powerful people fully invested in the old way of doing things, and these individuals can stand in the way of effective progress.

5) The students need to be the voice of change.

The same way students of the sixties paved the way for better institutions today, the students of 2009 have an obligation to make Howard University more efficient for their children and grandchildren. If you give up the struggle today while knowing there is a problem, then you are paving the way for your kids to go through the same heartache you are experiencing right now. The same is true for conscientious black scholars and black students at other institutions.

Expand access to higher education:

After graduating high school, all Americans should be prepared to attend at least one year of job training or higher education to better equip our workforce for the 21st century economy. We will continue to make higher education more affordable by expanding Pell Grants and initiating new tax credits to make sure any young person who works hard and desires a college education can access it.

Make sure our children are prepared for kindergarten:

One of the most critical times to influence learning in a child's life is the period before he or she reaches kindergarten.
